About McC McCulloch Wines

With vines growing on this land as early as 296AD, this region of Fruska Gora in Serbia first saw modern viticulture brought to it by the Roman Emperor, Probus. This vineyard is as much a project to revitalise the riches of the province, as it is an opportunity to taste the posterity of its fruits.

Using a Biodynamic approach to wine-making captivates holistic and ‘old world’ methodologies to work with nature, rather than fight it.  No artificial fertilizers or chemicals are used on the land or plants to optimize flavour, quality and individuality.

McC McCulloch Wines is the innovative fusion of husband and wife partnership, Englishman Don McCulloch and Serbian-born Seka Nikolic.

Don, originally of French and Scottish heritage, brings his wealth of knowledge extricated from working with wine-makers all over the globe, to produce this boutique vintage.

Bio Dynamic Viticulture

The biodynamic approach to grape-growing sees the vineyard as an ecological whole.

A Holisitic Approach

We feed the land rather than the plant, working with nature rather than fighting it.

All Natural

No artificial fertilisers, pesticides, insecticides or herbicides which can cause sickness in the land.

The medals awarded to McC Wines so far… GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE!

2014 saw our red wines scoop 3 winning medals.

The Coupage 2011, the red wine from our first ever vintage won a Bronze in the Decanter World Wine Awards, and then went on to win a Silver in the Vino.rs Great Serbian Wine Tasting Competition in Belgrade.

The Vino.rs Awards then put the Coupage 2012 to the test and to our delight awarded it a Gold.

We are thrilled to have our wines judged by the world’s best wine professionals and have them rated highly by such prestigious and authoritative competitions.

The Coupage 2011 and 2012 are made from 4 red grapes; Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and are aged in Serbian oak barrels for 12 months. BUY HERE (link to buy wine page)

What People Are Saying

"Very good young deep red, good red and blackberry fruits on nose and palate, natural ripeness and balance and a surprisingly (for me) good wine.  I gave it 16/20, so agree with Decanter"
Steven Spurrier, top British wine expert, author, journalist and wine merchant.

“Harmonious and the opposite of in your face. On the palate, excellent freshness and tannins that give shape but are not astringent. Good length and very satisfying… Tastes like a wine full of integrity and without artifice”
Julia Harding MW (Author and full-time wine researcher, assistant editor of www.JancisRobinson.com)

"I have absolutely no commercial link with this wine's owner/founder/winemaker Don McCulloch… I just think it is a fascinating project and I really hope it succeeds. The wine has a really brilliant crimson colour. The nose shows lovely red fruit notes (crushed cranberry) with a light oak dusting over the top. It's a lovely example of how red wine can be deep without being over-oaked or over-extracted or too heavy."
Monty Waldin   (Wine writer, critic, consultant, wine grower and leading authority on organic wine and biodynamic wine.)

“I was really impressed.  It’s very encouraging to see such an interesting wine emerge from Serbia, a country that has lots of viticultural potential.”
Jamie Goode (Wine journalist and expert, writer of www.wineanorak.com )

"The wine has great vibrance of fruit with a real life and energy to it… Fabulous mid-palate density and the tannins are fine and ripe which gives the wine great line and length.  We think it shows the great potential of the site and Don’s immense passion for his wines.”
Anna and Jason Flowerday (Winemakers of TWR, Marlborough, New Zealand)

"Simply my most favourite red wine in the world"
Paul McKenna,  (The UK’s most renowned Hypnotist and best selling author)

“The quality of McC wine is impressive to say the least. Don (McCulloch) and Seka (Nikolic) have been visionary in re-establishing a vineyard on this ancient wine growing location. The best winemaking traditions of the old world combined with New World technology and methods have been matched with biodynamic farming philosophies to create something truly stunning special.”
Duncan McFarlane  (Founder & CEO of Indevin Group Ltd -New Zealand’s Largest Producer)

Monty Waldin’s Tasting note on McC Coupage 2011
The wine has a really brilliant crimson colour. The nose shows lovely red fruit notes (crushed cranberry) with a light oak dusting over the top. The palate shows balanced, clear, sweet, ripe but savoury red fruit tannins with well-integrated oak leading to a fine fresh finish. It is a very clear and digestible wine. It’s youthful (age of the wine) and exuberant (young vines) so if you want to drink it now decant it in the cool of the morning and let it warm up by a couple of degrees as lunch- or supper-time approaches. It’s a lovely example of how red wine can be deep without being over-oaked or over-extracted or too heavy. The intensity of the aftertaste (“length”) will increase as the vines age.

Julia Harding MW ‘s Tasting note on McC Coupage 2011
Bright but dark crimson/cherry. Gentle, refined aroma of dark fruit, black plums and a touch of sweet spice and vanilla and a hint of something almost but not quite floral. Harmonious and the opposite of in your face. On the palate, excellent freshness and tannins that give shape but are not astringent. Still quite chewy. Spice and oak shows again on the palate but there's real harmony here and an attractively dry middle-European savoury quality with good acidity. Good length and very satisfying with plenty of spicy dark fruit in the middle. Tastes like a wine full of integrity and without artifice even though you can taste the oak spice up to the finish. Still quite young - you could broach it now but it seems to have a good few years ahead of it.

Jamie Goode’s Tasting Note on McC Coupage 2011
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s a leathery, herby, spicy edge to the berry fruits nose, with some savoury cedar notes. The palate is spicy and grippy with a leathery character under the sweet cherry and berry fruits, as well as a fine spiciness. Lovely balance and texture here, combining sweet fruit and savoury spiciness really well. Subtle reductive notes but also lovely fruit. 90/100
